There are perennial questions of those discerning a religious vocation. In 1895, Dennis Joseph Downing endeavored to equip souls in pursuit of God's will with the proper instruction on discerning vocations. In Questions on Vocations, Downing provides correct and relevant knowledge on vocations using Sacred Scripture, Tradition, and timeless testimonies from the greatest saints: Teresa of Avila, Francis of Assisi, Alphonsus Ligouri, Francis Xavier, and Thomas Aquinas.
Some of the questions this little catechism on vocations presents are:
· Are we obliged to follow the vocation which God has in store for us?
· Can you give examples showing the misfortune of not following a vocation?
· How many kinds of vocations or states of life are there?
· What are the advantages and signs of a religious vocation?
· Which are the means of preserving a vocation while preparing to enter the religious state?
· Are children obliged to obey their parents in the choice of a state of life?
· Is not long deliberation, as well as the advice of many friends, necessary in order to avoid mistakes?
· How may other persons, besides priests and parents, increase the number of vocations to the priesthood?
· What is the end to be kept in view in the choice of a state of life?
