The Incarnate Word is a publication produced by the religious of the Institute of the Incarnate Word and the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará of the Province of the Immaculate Conception in the United States of America.
It is born in accordance with the charism of our Religious Family, the Institute of the Incarnate Word, with the aim of prolonging the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Word in all mankind, in the entire man, and in every manifestation of man. It seeks to constitute a concrete and effective effort toward the inculturation of the Gospel according to the spirit marked-out in the Constitutions and Directories of our Institutes.
From this, its principal aim, and the Most Holy Mystery of Jesus Christ, The Incarnate Word receives its name and reason for being.
Its emergence possesses in addition, a triple motive:
a. The diffusion of the principal intellectual activities produced in the womb of our houses of formation in the United States, particularly of “The Bishop Sheen Residence” and “The Immaculate Heart of Mary House of Studies.” We believe that these contributions constitute a concrete effort toward contemporary intellectual speculation in view of the formation of future religious and priests.
b. The desire to provide our professors and associates with the possibility to count on a place of international scope in which to disclose their investigations.
c. We also desire to inculcate more and more into our religious in formation, the capacity to read articles of profound scientific level; to initiate them into intellectual publication by means of high quality training and professionalism; and to acquire the critical attitude adequate for making competent book reviews of various contemporary publications.
* * * Born in the womb of the formation of future religious and priests, philosophical and theological speculation, as well as the diverse aspects of human and Christian formation, constitute the heart of its content.
The various contributions are published in the original language in which they were presented. Notwithstanding, owing to the nature of the actual circumstances of the Catholic Church in the United States and also to that of Her vocations, English in the first place and Spanish in the second are the languages most utilized .
Owing to the development of the various intellectual and cultural activities accomplished in the womb of our houses of formation, each issue will be dedicated to a concrete aspect of knowledge.
A great part of the work of preparation and editing of this publication is brought forward by the same religious in formation under the supervision of their superiors.
We commit this new work of our religious family in the United States into the hands of the Incarnate Word – in whom are hidden all the treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge – and those of His Most Holy Mother under the precious title of the Immaculate Conception.
